We Stand Behind What We Sell
Every piece of lumber, for every project is hand-culled for quality and consistency. As a small business owner, we understand that happy, returning clients are our bread & butter.
That’s why we make sure to get it right – whether you’re after rough sawn boards, full timber frame logs or a custom building package built to your exact specs. Big builds? We love ‘em. Bring us your plans or cut list. Tell us what you need and we’ll mill it to match.
Is your timber going wild and your brush a little too brushy? We offer responsible mitigation in and around our service areas.

We proudly serve:
Our clients come from all these areas and more:
You can usually find us within a 90-mile radius of our mill site in Rye, CO.
We’re not a big box store, and we’re not trying to be. What we offer is quality you can count on, straightforward service, and people who take care of their customers.
Our Commitment
Today, our children represent a 5th generation, family-owned working ranch and our businesses are still located near the lush San Isabel forest! Our saw mill was born out of necessity and inspired by earlier generations’ working on the “old mill” back during the depression. We know what it’s like to work hard for every penny and to expect value in return.
High Quality Product
All our product is heavily sorted and hand-culled, for consistently top quality. No defective boards will leave our yard.
Family Owned and Operated
Our team is highly trained and proud to be here for the long haul.
Competitively Priced
Our prices are in line with the big competitors, but our standards stay higher.
Experienced Team
Our crew knows lumber, knows the mill, and knows how to treat people. Friendly service and real answers.
Native Woods
We specialize in native soft woods including Ponderosa, White Fir, Douglas Fir, Engelmann Spruce, Aspen. Local roots. Local wood. Local people. It’s kind of our thing.
What Our Clients Say
How We Got Here
1885
Thea Christenson arrived in Colorado from Rhode Island. Her husband Magnus, a Swedish prospector and sawmiller by trade, helped build what would become the family’s legacy in the San Isabel forest.
Early 1900s
Magnus lost his mill to a massive fire. The family moved down the mountain and built a new home, using a steam-powered mill.
1930s – 1970s
Three generations kept the mill running, upgrading from steam to tractor power to a full circle mill. John’s grandfather Tony ran the mill until the 1960’s.
1980s – 1990s
Roy and Shannon Christenson took over, running the mill alongside a working cattle operation. When Roy’s partner left the country, and took the diesel powerplant with him, the mill went quiet. Roy and Shannon saw a new opportunity; turning the ranch into Brush Canyon Ranch, a wedding venue that’s still going strong today!
2017
A storm damaged pavilion, a shortage of quality rough sawn lumber, and one very nervous wife later — John and his best friend Curtis fired up a brand new portable band sawmill.
2022 – Today
Native Lumber added sustainable logging and wildfire mitigation to the operation, keeping the forest healthy and the mill fed. Today, we employ 3-6 locals almost year round. Tony would approve.
What We Can Do
Wood’s only as good as what you do with it. Luckily… we’ve got ideas.

We’re Here to Help
How does ordering work?
Pretty simple. Give us a call, tell us what you need, and we’ll take it from there. For orders over $1,000 we ask for a deposit to get things moving. That’s it!
Is there a minimum order?
Nope. Big project or small, we treat every order the same.
Is everything cut to order?
Most of it, yes. We do keep some items on hand, such as surplus cuts, odds and ends, the occasional hidden gem. Give us a call before you drive over, because you never know who’ll get here first or what we can find for ya.
How is Native Lumber different from a big box store?
So glad you asked! Our lumber is cut closer to its true stated size, so you get more wood for your money. Every board is hand-culled for quality, so no defective material leaves our yard. And when you call us, you’re talking to the people who actually cut the wood. It’s our skin in this game – not so much at Home Depot!
